MEET THE CREATORS OF ZARJAZ

ANDREW LEWIS

EDITOR

Andrew Lewis was the original creator and editor of ZARJAZ. He returns to the role determined to deliver thrills reminiscent of the golden age of 2000AD, but with a modern sensibility.

He is proud that since leaving school he has never worn any kind of uniform.

He is still vegetarian and these days mostly vegan.

CRAIG DAWSON

He is currently enjoying writing for comics, which he hopes to continue, if comics will have him.

When he’s not doing that, he’s squaring up to the huge 'to read' pile, and despite his best efforts, it only seems to be getting larger and larger.

MICHAEL CROUCH

(ZARJAZ SCI FI SPECIAL 2024)

For Michael Crouch, a long, happy childhood of comics and play was followed by 40 years of drudgery and work, 33 of them in Telecommunications. Early retirement has seen a return to comics and play, along with a lot of short story writing and other things.

A 2000AD reader since prog 1, he wrote a JUDGE DREDD story, 'Monsters' published in ZARJAZ Vol.2 #37, and also wrote a story for Soaring Penguin Press’ WW1 anthology, TO END ALL WARS.

Michael's short story, 'The Trip', was featured in THE BEST OF BRITISH SCIENCE FICTION 2021 (Newcon Press).

TIM BURNELL

ARTIST: ANDERSON PSI DIVISION
(ZARJAZ SCI FI SPECIAL 2024)

Tim Burnell has read and loved comics as far back as he can remember. After going to his first comic convention, ten years ago, and meeting artists his own age with similar influences he realised he wanted to get back in touch with his childhood dream of being a comic artist.  So that day he bought a pad and pencils and made a commitment to finish a piece of art or sketch every day for 30 days. Ten years later and he is still keeping to the commitment of daily drawing and improvement.

Tim works in traditional media and loves the inking process the most in comic art.  He is currently trying more brush work to expand from pens and occasional dabbling in acrylics.  He is a massive fan of the work of Alan Davis, with '80s Marvel and 2000AD being where his biggest inspirations lie.  He is motivated to keep improving and drawing by the motto, "the next one will be better"!

He has worked on the first two Comic Creative UK anthologies and DUI vol 3, as well as many personal webcomics.  He regularly posts on insta.

PATRICK BROWN

Patrick is currently working on 'Penny Blood', a red-headed, red-dressed resistance fighter in alien-occupied Victorian London. The first episode appears in ANNO DOMINI 1900, the new retro-sci-fi anthology from Sector 13 Comics

Patrick is also drawing Andy Smith scripts for FALCON.

PETE HOBSON

WRITER: M.A.C.H. 1
(ZARJAZ SCI FI SPECIAL 2024)

Raised on a diet of 80’s/90's cartoons, comics, action figures, RPGs, tabletop/video games and Christianity, Pete Hobson was a geek before it was fashionable and has successfully retained the unfashionable elements to this day.

He has had work published in FUTUREQUAKE #21 and #27, the CCUK Anthology #2 & #3 and has upcoming work in the WIP Comic Short Story Anthology: TALL TALES AND SHORT STORIES. Pete also has a WARHAMMER 40K fan-fic on A Vox In The Void's YouTube Channel.

Pete is thankful to God for these opportunities and for his fantastic family, but also for proving God still loves those who seem, like Pete, hellbent on screwing it all up!

CHRIS LACKIE

WRITER: THE RETURN OF SUPER-BEAN
(ZARJAZ SCI FI SPECIAL 2024)

Chris Lackie has written comics published by Red Stylo Media, Oneshi Press, Arledge Comics, and TO Comix Press, and he has stories featured in other comic anthologies, such as the Best of Indie Anthology 2019 and the Continental Cryptid Anthology.

DAVID COURT

THE COSMIC CLAW PRESENTS: THRICESLAIN
(ZARJAZ SCI FI SPECIAL 2024)

(Author portrait by Andrew Sawyers)

Immune to explosions, David Court lives in Coventry with wife Tara, dog Rebel, and an ever-growing beard. Tara once asked David if he'd write about how great she was - David replied that he would, because he specialised in short fiction. Despite that, they're still wed.

David is a writer, poet, radio presenter, freelance film journalist, voice artist and occasional liar.

His influences are the works of Grant Morrison and Alan Moore, and his previous comics work can be found in THE THEORY by Twisted Comics. Read more about the enigma that is David Court here.

NICK XYLAS

(ZARJAZ SCI FI SPECIAL 2024)

Nick Xylas first joined the comics revolution at the age of eight, when his mum bought him a copy of ACTION issue 1.

Since then, he has written many scripts for 2000AD (we didn't say that any of them had been published).

TOM DAVIES

WRITER: STRONTIUM DOG; GREEN IS THE NEW GREY
(ZARJAZ SCI FI SPECIAL 2024)

Tom Davies describes himself thus: "I write things, usually involving a combination of the following: death-defying escapes, absurd machinery, locked room mysteries, locked heart romances, Victorian super sleuths, retro-futuristic nightmares, and occult high-jinks."

Pretty much a social media absentee, Tom lurks on X and can be found here

MATTHEW ELLIS

WRITER: ANDERSON PSI DIVISION
(ZARJAZ SCI-FI SPECIAL 2024)

Matthew Ellis has worked in Advertising for over 25 years. He thought after writing and storyboarding thousands of scripts & videos that writing a comic strip would be relatively straight forward. But hell no! All Mat learned was that it is really tough.

Outside of reading comics Mat attends Taylor Swift concerts, sometimes even bringing his teenage daughters with him. He has mad crushes on Grant Morrison, Peter Milligan, Mark Millar and Shelly Bond.

Mat brings his own identical twin brother to comic conventions. You will never see them both together until it’s too late. They work like Raptaurs.

LAURENCE ALISON

WRITER: FREAK OUT! (AN INFERNO STORY)

(ZARJAZ SCI FI SPECIAL 2024)

Laurence Alison is delighted to contribute an Inferno homage strip to ZARJAZ, inspired by his love of the brilliance of 2000AD legend Massimo Belardinelli and American comics auteur Daniel Clowes.

Laurence writes HEDREK, WARFIGHTER, OUT THERE, MADNESS AND MONSTERS and ODYSSEUS: IN DEFIANCE OF THE GODS.

He is a Forensic Psychologist by day, and a comic creator the rest of the time.

JACK BATES

ARTIST: FREAK OUT! (AN INFERNO STORY)

(ZARJAZ SCI FI SPECIAL 2024)

Jack Bates lives on the wet, miserable west coast of Ireland.

When it’s not raining he rushes out and paints the wild rustic scenery of the place. When it is raining he sits down and draws comics. This gives him a bad back, but he doesn’t mind cause he knows that one day he’ll make millions as an illustrator.

You can find Jack’s work on Instagram: horrific creatures here and beautiful landscapes here.
